Attorney and human rights defender Gela Nikoleishvili is speaking with us about ongoing legal processes, the work of prosecution and the evaluation of west.

Mr. Gela, the interest of society about current legal processes is so big, that somehow an impression is created that the government is trying to conceal some more problematic themes with this theme. The arrest of Vano Merabishvili caused a serious disturbance both in internal and external geopolitical fields, and the scandal still continues. How do you evaluate all of this? What reality do we have after 7 months from change of government in the sphere of justice?

On June 1^st, “Washington Post” published a letter of editorial board which consists of quite unpleasant messages for Ivanishvili’s government. Its authors criticize new government because of arrest of Merabishvili and generally for the process which is called “restoration of justice” in Georgia; also they are calling/suggesting western governments to take a more rigid position regarding this issue. It is interesting, does this letter indicate that Obama’s administration’s attitude towards Ivanishvili’s government may change and if it is so, what changes may be made?

President Obama’s speech on Thursday was the most important statement on counterterrorism policy since the 2001 attacks, a momentous turning point in post-9/11 America. For the first time, a president stated clearly and unequivocally that the state of perpetual warfare that began nearly 12 years ago is unsustainable for a democracy and must come to an end in the not-too-distant future.

Non-Governmental Organization “ex political prisoners for the human rights” held a meeting in the Castle of Sport on May 19^th, 2013. The slogan of the meeting was: “regime should be tried, justice should be recovered!”. Together with other speakers, Dutch citizen, chief of association of “people for people”, William Wanderwide said a speech. It was said in the speech of Dutch human rights defender, that “as a result of governance of “National Movement” founded by Saakashvili, 9970 people lost their private property; the money in amount from 2 to 5 billion dollars was taken from you. The majority of senior officials of “United National Movement” were addicted to drugs.” Also, Mr. Wanderwide accused embassies of several countries in support of Mikheil Saakashvili and ignorance of multiple violations of human rights. Why does Dutch human rights defender, William Wandewide state, that president Saakashvili is a “Mickey Mouse” and what does he think about the new government, you will find out all of the aforesaid from his interview with “Georgia & World”.

Today, when Bacho Akhalaia is in jail and his trials are prolonged without end, naturally interest arises: what is really happening? Was it really so hard to prove his guild and committed crimes? The case of Colonel Sergo Tetradze was one of those famous cases, which the “Nationals” could not manage to hide and which will never be forgotten by Georgian people, especially after they hear the story from Tetradze’s attorney. Several days ago, one of the witnesses on Tetradze’s case, ex-military, David Londaridze was questioned and our interest is caused by exactly that trial. “Georgia & World” spoke with an attorney of Sergo Tetradze – Magda Kotrikadze.

Nana  Kakabadze, a human rights advocate, speaks with Geworld about the current legal processes and their assessments from  both local and foreign political experts.

- Mrs. Nana, detention of Vano Merabishvili has caused so enthusiastic ovations in a wide society  that at the day of the court process, the entire Kutaisi went out in the streets to demonstrate their satisfaction. What do you think, can we consider this arrest of   former prime-minister as a crown of that political process that has been promised by the Coalition in the pre-election period and that has been started upon substitution of the state power? 

Will the spine break or not, will Vano Merabishvili cooperate with investigation or not? Some sources claim, that Merabishvili already began talking and this circumstance, for his teammates, including Mikheil Saakashvili may become fatal, but other sources deny this categorically. It is interesting, that Merabishvili is facing so called “prisoner dilemma”, which is one of the fundamental problems in the boundaries of the games theory.

Actor Guram Pirtskhalava speaks with “Georgia & World” about the important recent events.

Mr. Guram, the confrontation which had place on 17^th May on the Rustaveli ave. caused acute reaction in the government and especially in the non-governmental sector. Everyone states in one voice, that on that day the fundamental human right – of expression was violated. What do you think about these events, what is your opinion about aforesaid?

There are already several years that NGO defending the rights of the LGBT society tires to organize the event on May 17, against the homophobia constantly protested from the wide society side.

Who fights for making the traditional celebration of this day in Georgia and of what importance it is for our country – for it “Georgia and the World” addressed Dimitri Lortkipanidze with these and other important questions.

For the discussion about the details of war of 2008, “Georgia & World” visited ex parliamentarian of double invitation, Guram Vakhtangishvili, but as it turned out, Mr. Guram wants to ask more questions to the old government, and does not really want to recall those horrible days. Our discussion was not in the manner of dialogue, he gave us only questions, which we present to you in an unchanged way.

On August 8 at 5 o’clock the war was already over. Ever since, new Government started to search for the one who was guilty, the details and the causing reasons of the war, all mass media means got interested in searching for new facts and stories. Every new fact that is published is scary and every time I think, what more can I hear and find out?! But always, when one meets the witness of the war 2008, they get to know the facts you don’t even want to listen to, you don’t want to be Georgian any longer.

A theme of deals of the former state power with terrorists becomes more and more actual and gradually  gains the leading positions in the Georgian massmedia. Bidzina Ivanishvili also mentioned  about it in “Rustavi 2” TV program, that has increased even higher a  public interest on this topic. However, until quoting his comments, it seems advisable to recall some previous statements, which had made this scandalous issue a subject of general consideration.

The US has announced that it will provide militants in Syria, now openly admitted to being Al Qaeda terrorists, with $123 million in military aid - while thousands of cancer patients at home are being turned away from clinics because of budget cuts. Compounding the criminal negligence of telling sick people to seek help elsewhere, is the fact that the military aid the US is providing terrorists in Syria will be used to perpetuate an already two-year-long, sectarian-driven humanitarian disaster.

A Huge Mystery Remains To Be Solved

Yesterday marked the 39th anniversary of the day when the US Government declared bankruptcy. Oh, they didn't call it that at the time. But what happened on August 15, 1971 was that the US defaulted on its promise to pay gold for dollars.

Before that day, gold was the legal linchpin of the world monetary system. Although every currency was defined in terms of the US dollar, the dollar itself was legally defined as 1/35th of a troy ounce of gold.

August’s events have a special place in the long list of Saakashvili’s regime’s crimes, which lead to the big casualties of peaceful (Georgian and Osetian) population. Mikheil Saakashvili is sharing with us interesting memories, while waiting for questioning about the August war. Even though the auditory of chief of “National Movement” is very thin, and his statements are not anymore considered very important, it still is reasonable to pay attention to what he said recently on the air on “Rustavi 2” channel. Saakashvili touched one of the most obscure episodes of the war of 2008, as if by chance, he announced quite scandalous information. What goal was Saakashvili trying to achieve by sharing these tele-memoirs and what effect will they have on his future?

In 2011, the fact of arrest of Jewish businessmen was followed by international scandal. Georgia escaped much bigger scandal five years earlier, when according to Adeishvili’s indication, the same plan was to be implemented against Swiss businessman, the president of concern “Sierra Oil Enterprise” - Thomas Exel.
